About Patrick

Patrick Smith is the Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Bracknell

Your Local Candidate

Patrick is a local resident, living with his wife and two year old son in the heart of Bracknell. He grew up in neighbouring Reading and has spent most of his life in the area.

Having studied acoustical engineering at the University of Southampton, Patrick now works as a senior project manager for an audio-visual company based just ten minutes from Bracknell. His professional life has offered him some fascinating insights into many aspects of business, economics and culture, having worked with many of the UK’s most prominent companies, charities and community organisations.

Patrick’s passion is to see a politics in this country that works for everyone, that tackles entrenched inequalities and creates genuine opportunity for all. In 2017 he is fighting against a dangerous Hard Brexit, the consequences of which will be disastrous for our economy and will hurt the vulnerable in our society the most.

"Bracknell, to me, is home

…Bracknell is my community; it’s where my wife and I made our home, and where we started our family."

Why Patrick?

If you want to avoid a disastrous Hard Brexit, this is your chance. Democracy didn’t end on June 23rd 2016, the people can have their say on what happens next. This election is your opportunity to change the direction of our country.

Fighting Hard Brexit

I respect the outcome of last year’s referendum on our membership of the EU, but the vote to leave left many more questions unanswered. By pursuing an ideological Hard Brexit that wasn’t on the ballot paper last June the Tory government aren’t enacting the will of the people, they are interpreting the will of the people. Very nearly half the population of our country didn’t want any Brexit at all, many more of those who did vote to leave did so on the basis of promises that are not compatible with Theresa May’s Hard Brexit strategy – their voices deserve to be heard.

Single Market Access

There is no element of our relationship with Europe as important as our access to the single market. Participation in the single market enables British consumers and companies to buy and sell, import and export with our neighbours across the continent at no cost and without any red tape, exactly as if we were doing business internally. Leaving the single market would be catastrophic for British businesses, devastating to our economy and ultimately destructive to the lives of millions of ordinary people whose jobs and livelihoods would be at risk. This is the Brexit the Conservative Party wants.

Fair Funding For Schools

Our schools are on the brink of financial crisis and teacher morale is at an all time low. Per pupil funding is at its lowest in decades whilst schools face ever rising costs. It’s not enough to simply encourage efficiency savings, head teachers have already exhausted all such avenues. Vacated teaching posts are being left unfilled while local schools are on the verge of asking parents to make specific per pupil financial contributions – this is the end of state funded education as we know it. It is critical that the next government protects schools funding, both in line with rising costs and on a per pupil basis.

Protecting Our NHS

The Conservative government  have all but declared war on our precious National Health Service. Antagonistic negotiations and a refusal to engage with the legitimate concerns of dedicated front-line medical professionals have already led junior doctors to engage in the first all-out strike in the history of the NHS. Our vital nursing staff are now facing the same difficult decisions. The next government has to invest in the NHS, working with rather than against NHS staff to tackle long term challenges and ensure high quality health care is available to all for generations to come.

I was shocked and saddened to wake up on Tuesday morning to the news of the terrible events in Manchester. Terrorism of all forms is depraved and beyond any justification, but the deliberate targeting of children and young people makes this attack even more perverse.   My thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and […]

I’ve written on a number of occasions before about the injustice of public sector pay cuts, freezes and below inflation pay rises (all of which effectively amount to real terms cuts).   Over the last five years we’ve had to make some really tough decisions as a nation, including finding savings in many areas of […]
